Crossword solvers to lock horns

The 46th Annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament will be held at the beginning of April.

Will Shortz, New York Times Crossword Puzzle Editor, will be directing the nation's largest and oldest crossword competition here in Stamford. Contestants will be solving eight original crosswords and scoring will be based on speed and accuracy.

Prizes will be awarded in over 20 categories. The grand prize will be $7,500.

Admission as a competitor to all events including the Friday will be $270 for individuals and $470 for pairs, while all competitive events starting on the Saturday morning will cost $230 for individuals and $400 for pairs. Non-competitor admission will be $215 if including Friday, and $165 starting Saturday. Reception only and Friday evening games will cost $75. Spectator tickets for final playoffs plus puzzles will be $35.

Sign-in for the Friday will be from 7:00 to 8:00 pm, followed by entertainment and warm-up puzzles, wine and cheese reception, and awards for the evening games beginning at 11:00 pm.

The Saturday will feature a puzzle market, puzzles from 11:00 am to 4:45 pm, and games and entertainment. Sunday will have Puzzle 7 followed by Crossworder Got Talent Show, prizes awarded at noon, and a Puzzle 8 Championship at 12:30 pm.

Winners often have pictures taken at events like this taken to local Print shops to be included in family Calendars and newsletters.

The tournament will welcome crossword lovers (also known as cruciverbalists) from April 5 through 7 at the Stamford Marriot, 243 Tresser Boulevard.
