Newtown is celebrating America’s 250th birthday this August.
The event will include a variety of history-themed activities. A fife and drum band will perform throughout the morning, and there will be a reenactment of the Battle at the Bird-In-Hand at around 11:00 am. The Washington Crossing Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will be offering colonial-inspired crafts for kids in front of the Bird-In-Hand building. In the afternoon, a reenactor playing Quaker artist Edward Hicks will discuss Hicks’ work at Newtown Friends Meeting House.
There will be a free cookout serving hot dogs, beverages and chips in Boone Garden. Newtown Theatre will be showing silent films and hosting a Civil War band performance. The theater recommends these for anyone who needs to cool down inside. Other indoor activities include tours of the Newtown Library Company and the Newtown Fire House Museum and a video presentation at First National Bank and Trust.
Newtown Historic Association is selling a selection of Newtown Celebrates America 250 items, including T-Shirts, hats and tote Bags, online. Organizations often work with graphic design experts to create this type of item. A full schedule and list of activities is available on the event website.
