Musical adaptation of classic coming to Newtown

Offering a way to celebrate the holiday season, the Newtown Arts Company will be presenting, ‘A Wonderful Life’—the musical version.

The story follows the life of affable George Bailey as he grows from a child to a man, who along the way discovers the true meaning of a wonderful life with the assistance of a bumbling angel.

The Frank Capra movie ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ was first introduced to audiences back in 1946, and over the years has come to be seen as a classic by many Americans. A musical version of the movie was created by Joe Raposo (music) and Sheldon Harnick (lyrics) in 1991 and made it to Broadway not much later. Since that time, theatrical companies have put on their own presentations, and now it will be put on in Newtown.

The story will be the same as the movie, with the addition of songs at critical points, such as when George and Mary sing ‘Good Night’ to one another after chaperoning the high school dance. Those that plan to attend may wish to dress as one of the characters and use the pictures they take to form novel Holiday Cards.

The show will be put on Friday and Saturday, December 4 and 5, at the Newtown Theater at 120 N State St., starting at 8:00 pm each night. Tickets will be $21 and $24.
