Local theater to present stage classic

Fans of theater in Newtown who are in the mood for nostalgia are in for a treat, as the Newtown Arts Company will be presenting ‘On Golden Pond’ later this month. The movie made from the play won ‘Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium’, ‘Best Actress’ and ‘Best Actor’ Oscars back in 1982.

Ethel Thayer and her grouchy, crotchety professor husband Norman are an older couple coping with the generation gap, getting older, and relationships with their daughter, her fiancé, and their son.

This play is a mix of funny yet touching insights into timeless family situations – a classic witness to human change and growth.

Roger Ebert commented after seeing On Golden Pond, the movie starring Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn, that he felt a renewed resolve to listen better and to attempt to mend his own relationships. Although the stage play is considered by critics to be somewhat formulaic, Ernest Thompson has creatively woven conversation into great scenes depicting honesty and love. Some beautiful scenic ponds have been subjects of poster printing over the years.

Reserved tickets are available by phone, online, and at the Newtown Theatre Box Office one hour before each performance.

The play will be held at the Newtown Theatre, 120 N. State Street, Newtown. Dates and times are June 19th, 24th, and 25th at 7:30pm, June 20th and 21st at 8pm, and June 22nd at 3pm.
