One of Newtown’s annual traditions is the first performance of the New Year by the Newtown Chamber Orchestra. This year, it will be ‘Soloists on Stage’, who are graciously performing for free with proceeds of the event going to the NCO.
The eight celli of Katrina Kormanski’s Cellissimo Bellissimo will be playing Bachianas Brasilieras No. 5 by Hector Villa-Lobos. Ms. Kormanski is the NCO’s principal cellist, and the Trenton Brass Quintet+1 will be performing a medley of three Broadway songs.
The ensemble is composed of two trumpets, a French horn, a trombone, and the group’s artistic director Karl Megules on tuba. The ‘+1’ in this case will be Lennie Pucciatti on percussion.
La Bella Nota Jazz Quintet, led by John Kormanski on sax, will play Blluesette-Toots Thielemans. Other instruments include trumpet, keyboard, upright bass, and drums. An interesting side note, the members of this group have amassed a total of over 120 years in our armed forces.
David Larson has transcribed and edited Baldassare Galuppi’s Dixit Dominus 1 for ‘NJWOMENSONG’ directed by Hilary Colton, a year-old community women’s choir created for women of all walks of life who love choral singing. This presentation would likely make a good subject for the orchestra’s 2016 brochure printing.
The performance will be given January 17, at 7:00 pm, Lutheran Church of God’s Love, 791 Newtown – Yardly Road.
