Those of us here in Danbury who remember and enjoy the films of Frank Capra, and those who just enjoy old movies, will want to mark our Calendars for the upcoming four-film series featuring the legendary director.
Peter D. Kramer, a seasoned editor and reporter in journal news entertainment, will be moderating for each evening’s movie. He will be introducing each film and leading a discussion after the screenings.
The first film will be “It Happened One Night”, a 1934 romp starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. This film won all five major Academy Awards that year. It marked the beginning of the classic romantic comedies that featured a witty clash between a couple with temperaments, social positions, and personalities that were totally mismatched.
Following films in the series will be Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck’s ‘Meet John Doe’ released in 1941, ‘You Can’t Take it with You’ from 1938 starring Lionel Barrymore and Jean Arthur, and the iconic James Stewart’s ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington’ released in 1939.
‘Meet John Doe’ is a drama about a man who needs money and impersonates a person who declares he will be committing a protest suicide. ‘You Can’t Take it with You’ is a comedy about a man from high society who is engaged to a good-natured girl from an eccentric family. ‘Mr. Smith goes to Washington’ is a heartwarming story of an inexperienced man who fills a vacant senate seat and contends with political bureaucracy.
The first film will be shown at the Schoolhouse Theater, 3 Owens Road, at nearby Croton Falls on January 14. The other screenings will be shown at the same location early in February, March, and finally in May.
