Local fraternal organization plans flag recognition ceremony

It’s June and soon, Danbury locals will have the opportunity to show their patriotism by attending the annual Danbury Elks Lodge Flag Day Ceremony.

The Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks Danbury Lodge 120 invites the public to the traditional event to honor one of the nation’s most prominent symbols of freedom – the American flag. Everyone is encouraged to bring their family, friends, and especially their children to this display of patriotism.

The Danbury Drum Corps will once again be playing stirring Sousa marches and other favorites, followed by lodge members giving a review of the history of our country’s flag. A color guard will present American flags from the first version to the present – the Pine tree Flag, the Red Cross of St. George Flag, The Betsy Ross Flag, the 1818 Flag, the Snake Flag, the 1795 Flag, the Flag of 48 Stars, and Old Glory.

Flag Day was originated in 1907 by the BPO Elks Grand lodge and became a mandatory observance for every lodge in 1911, a requirement still observed today. In 1949, Woodrow Wilson officially recognized the event. However, it was not until Harry S. Truman – a member of the Elks himself – that June 14th became the nation’s Flag Day.

The event will be taking place on the Saturday at 1:00pm at the Danbury War Memorial, 1 Memorial Drive, Danbury.
