For the 34th year, the Playwrights Project is presenting its Play by Young Writers Festival, which showcases scripts written by California students under 18. Five winners were chosen from 415 entries by a panel comprising theater professionals.
The festival is set for the Old Globe, and this year, for the first time in the festival's history, a complete musical will be presented. The shows are divided into two programs – A and B. A is suitable for those age 11 and up, while B is aimed at those 14 and older.
The first production on the A list is the musical. Entitled ‘Trash! The Musical (An Autobiography)’, the work by Naomi Melville observes trash as it leaps from its can to discover its aim in life. The second show in this track is a staged reading of ‘Just Let Me Help’, by Marco Herrera of Imperial Beach.
The productions in Program B are ‘Sea of Fog’ from Jack Ventimilia, and Emma Kuli's ‘A Mother's Mother’. The staged reading is ‘Have Hope’, a story of two cats who set out to find their mother, who is missing. The playwright is Shyla de Hoop. Organizers of this type of festival can use flyer printing to create programs for the audience.
The Festival runs January 10 through 12, and again from 22 through 26. Some days have sold out, so interested parties should visit the Playwright Project website for tickets soon, or call (858) 384-2970.
