Group brings Caribbean to San Diego
A reggae group from Jamaica is set to bring Caribbean sounds to America’s Finest City.
Junior Marvin and Al Anderson, who were both guitarists for Bob Marley and the Wailers, formed The Original Wailers in 2008 in Kingston, Jamaica. Marvin left the band, but Al Anderson remained as its lead vocalist and guitarist, and the group’s driving force.
Anderson called the current lineup as “The United Nations of Sound.” The group comprises Chet Samuel on rhythm guitar and handling lead vocals. Samuel is from Puerto Rico and has worked with Burning Spear and 506 CREW.
Drumming is by Paapa Nyarkoh, who is from Ghana and specializes in African rhythms. He has worked with artists including Hugh Masakela.
The bass guitar duties fall to Mexican multi-instrumentalist Omar Lopez, who is also an arranger, composer, and producer who has worked with artists like Sly Stone.
Jamaican Ras Klamps plays organ and keyboards and has decades of experience with reggae, working with artists like Rita Marley.
Background vocals are by Jamaican vocalist Erica Newell, who has worked with stars like Damian Marley, and Nigerian Hassanah Iroegbu, a singer/songwriter celebrated for her powerful vocal ability.
The band released their Grammy-nominated debut EP “Miracle” in 2012, and recently released a new single “Si Tu Me Lo Das” preparatory to dropping their next album.
The Original Wailers will be at the Music Box on July 13. When they book performances like this, organizers often use poster printing methods to advertise them.
