Volunteers keep bookstore open

A bookstore in San Diego's South Park only had to close for a day when its owners faced an emergency, thanks to help from volunteers.

Seth Marko and his wife Jennifer Powel own The Book Catapult, which had only been open for a year, but has already become the go-to shop for readers who want something different. The couple have a passion for Books and enjoy sharing this love with others.

However, late in January, Marko had to have open heart surgery on an emergency basis. Powel said the surgery was intense but was the only option for Marko, and the couple was sure everything would go well. They were correct, but Marko was unable to return to work, and as Powel was his caregiver, as well as responsible for their daughter, who is only three years old, she was unable to open the store. That's when the volunteers stepped in.

When they heard about the couple's situation, volunteers came from competing bookstores and kept the shop open until the couple could return to work. They did so free of charge. When events like this happen, they can provide an opportunity for proprietors to use graphic design to incorporate a tribute into their supplies.

Powel said she found the support touching and heart-warming but, knowing their colleagues as they do, didn't find it difficult to believe that their colleagues would be so helpful.
