Alt-rock band comes to San Diego

An alt-rock band born in Detroit will be in San Diego soon.

Sponge was created in 1992 by Vinnie Dombroski (vocals), Joey Mazzola and Mike Cross (guitarists), drummer Jimmy Paluzzi, and bassist Tim Cross. The new quintet shopped demos featuring the song “Neenah Menasha” around. They were noticed by Pablo Mathiason of A&R, with the result that a Columbia Records subsidiary, The Work Group, signed them in 1993.

In 1994, Sponge dropped their debut album, “Rotting Piñata,” which earned a Platinum rating and enjoyed commercial, critical, and global success. Sponge went on several tours, had two singles in the Top Ten, and appeared on “Late Night with David Letterman” and the “Jon Stewart Show.” On top of these successes came another, the release of their second album, “Wax Ecstatic,” in 1996. Rolling Stone Magazine gave this effort a “Song of the Year” nod, and the album put two more songs into the Top Ten.

Sponge has continued recording and tours almost constantly, but the band’s lineup has changed, and founder Vinnie Dombroski is still the only original member still with the band. A review says:

“Sponge was amazing, sounded just as good as they did in the 90's, if not better!”

Sponge will be at Brick by Brick, 1130 Buenos Avenue in San Diego on April 4. Shows like this can be enhanced when they are supported by organizers who use poster printing to create advertising.
