Metal mariachis head to San Diego

A band that successfully combines mariachi music with metal is on the way to San Diego.

Metalachi, as their name implies, plays metal mariachi music. The odd combination started one night when the band members, all professional mariachi musicians, decided to try their hand at playing a heavy metal song in mariachi style. They had an unexpectedly good time, audiences loved it, and a new group was born.

The group is quick to point out they are not a metal band playing mariachi, but exactly the opposite. The members are originally from Juarez, Mexico, but are now based in Los Angeles and have been touring for over a decade, performing in venues from neighborhood bars to festivals like Megacruise, Heavy Montreal, and the Monsters of Rock Cruise.

Metalachi draws inspiration from a wide range of artists, channeling the raw energy of Rob Zombie, GWAR’s flamboyance, and the sometimes risqué humor and approach of Steel Panther. Their music blends covers of classic metal bands like Metallica with mariachi music from Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan and Vicente Fernandez. They intersperse their music with comedy skits and interludes, making them truly one of a kind. A review says:

“So much fun. Metalachi always puts on a great show . . .”

Metalachi will be at the Music Box on August 15.When they plan concerts like this, organizers may want to work with brochure printing to create programs, as audiences like to learn about the performers.
