San Diego Symphony celebrates summer

An upcoming concert is the perfect way for San Diegans to celebrate summer.

The San Diego Symphony has planned an all-Tchaikovsky evening, featuring pianist Joyce Yang, with Enluis Montes Olivar on the podium. The program features four works including the famous “1812 Overture, Op. 49.”

“Capriccio italien” is a “fantasy” for orchestra that was composed by Tchaikovsky in 1880 after a trip to Italy. Many of the themes in the composition are inspired by Italian folk tunes.

The “Piano Concerto No. 1” will feature Joyce Yang at the keyboard. Yang, who was born in Seoul, South Korea, has won numerous awards including the silver medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2005. In 2017, she was nominated for a Grammy for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance.

“Francesca da Rimini, Op. 32” is based on characters from Dante’s “Inferno,” and is a tone poem depicting the fate of Francesca, who fell in love with her despicable husband’s brother. The husband discovered and killed the lovers, after which they were punished by being trapped in a terrible storm in the second Circle of Hell.

The final piece is the beloved “1812 Overture,” which is often performed with live cannon accompaniment. However, pyrotechnics are standing in for the artillery in the San Diego performance, as a fireworks show is scheduled for the evening. Organizers of events like this can provide audiences with information about the performers by using brochure printing to create programs.
