Magnus Pelander established Witchcraft in 2000 in Örebro, Sweden so that the group could record a tribute to Roky Erickson and Bobby Liebling. Erickson was a singer/songwriter known for his pioneering work in psychedelic rock, and Liebling was a member of the band Pentagram, a doom metal band founded in Alexandria, Virginia. Witchcraft’s tribute single, “No Angel or Demon,” dropped in 2002 and caught the notice of Rise Above Records, who signed them. Pelander is the only member of the group who is still with the band.
Witchcraft is described as an “occult metal” outfit, and their musical style varies from hard rock to Pentagram-style doom metal. Their work also includes influences from progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and traditional rock. Their first studio album, dropped in 2004, was “Witchcraft,” which contained the “No Angel or Demon” track.
The band has continued to evolve, as later albums such as “The Alchemist” and “Firewood” have included more progressive sounds. Their latest album, 2025’s “IDAG,” will, according to Pelander:
“. . . reap souls and destroy wicked minds. And perhaps mend a couple of broken ones."
The comment seems to indicate Witchcraft is as mysterious as ever.
Witchcraft will be at Brick by Brick, located at 130 Buenos Avenue in San Diego on March 5. Performances like this can be boosted when organizers display colorful Posters, which they can find at local Print shops.
