A jazz and swing band that got its start in the underground music scene in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is coming to San Diego.
The Squirrel Nut Zippers came to national attention in 1996 when their album “Hot” was aired. It was a blend of Delta blues, jazz, swing, and Southern storytelling, and it ignited a response that took the band into the spotlight. The album was on the Billboard 200 chart for 51 weeks, and contained the tracks “Blue Angel,” “Put a Lid on It,” and their smash hit “Hell.” The song has entered pop culture and has been used in television series such as “Lucifer.”
The band has taken breaks and reunited several times. In 2009, they released their live album, “Lost at Sea,” and a studio album, “Beasts of Burgundy,” in 2018. They have continued touring since then, and their current tour celebrates the 30th anniversary of “Hot,” which they will play in its entirety. A review says:
“Squirrel Nut Zippers is more than a band, each member is an actor, a performer intent on entertaining through more than just song.”
Also on the bill for the evening is Gregory Page, a guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist who has toured the world, and worked with artists such as John C. Reilly and Jason Mraz. He is also a writer.
The concert is set for Saturday, February 14 at the Jewel Box. Shows like this benefit from the colorful advertising created when organizers use poster printing.
