UCSD may build fire station on campus

The University of California at San Diego (UCSD) may be getting ready to build a fire station on campus, according to a statement by city and university officials.

The suggested station is one of 19 an independent consultant recommended as part of a 2011 report that found fire coverage in a number of areas of San Diego was inadequate. Some neighborhoods in proximity to UCSD were named as needing additional coverage.

A station on campus has become increasingly important since plans for a Regents Road Bridge have been shelved. The bridge would have shortened the time for emergency responses near the campus.

Since the study was finished, officials from both the city and the university have discussed developing a partnership in which the university would offer land and pay to build the new station. Meanwhile, the city would provide the money to operate and maintain it. The discussions are ongoing, and a proposal about the project could be unveiled in the spring and submitted to the city council.

If the project goes through, the new station will be located on the campus's northwest corner, at the intersection of North Torrey Pines Road and Genesee Avenue. The station should be finished in Spring 2020.

Projects like this can be enhanced if officials work with newsletter printing companies to develop an informative letter for area residents, who would be impacted by the development.
