Smart San Diego gets 50 minutes of fame

San Diego has been featured in a National Geographic documentary that examines why the Southern California metropolis should be considered as one of the ‘World’s Smart Cities’, as the series is called.

National Geographic is developing a new series of documentaries, in which it examines cities all over the world that are at the cutting edge in terms of innovation, technology, quality of life, and urban development. San Diego is the only North American city to be featured in the series.

According to the San Diego Tourism Authority, it is expected that more than 150 million households in other countries, and 85 million households in the United States, will see the program. The 50-minute show, according to the Authority, could provide extensive exposure for San Diego as a top vacation and business destination.

The show was filmed last fall. The crew paid special attention to the efforts in marine conservation being made by SeaWorld, the growing local craft beer industry, the new central library’s architecture, and the work being done at UC San Diego’s Center for Algae Biotechnology.

The show is ran in the U.S. on April 25 at 8:00 am, but can be seen again May 2 at 8:00 am on the National Geographic Channel.

City officials might work with brochure printers on Booklets about the city, incorporating information from the show, to be distributed at popular tourist destinations.
