San Diego's airport closes commuter terminal
San Diego International Airport, Lindbergh Field, has closed its commuter terminal.
June 3 was the last day for flights to arrive and depart from the Commuter Terminal. Starting June 4, the commuter flights began to use the main terminals.
Most commuter flights from San Diego go to Los Angeles, and are using larger aircraft than in the past. The airlines apparently need the gate space for larger numbers of passengers.
One of the commuter airlines, United Express, will switch its operations to Terminal 2 West. A second company, American Eagle, will switch to gates located in Terminal 2 East. A third carrier, Seaport Airlines, will go to Terminal 1.
The airport is run by the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. This agency has its offices in the Commuter Terminal, and will leave them at that location for now.
The future of the Commuter Terminal is yet to be determined. A long-range planning study is now underway that will decide the airport's direction in the future. The building is a local landmark and features a full-color mural portrait of aviator Charles Lindbergh on its wall.
The airport authority might consider working with brochure printers to create a booklet to be placed throughout the airport and travel-oriented locations in the city, reminding travelers about the closure so they can plan trips effectively.
