Two San Diego, California, neighborhoods, Mission Hills and Hillcrest, may soon receive new parking meters and different enforcement hours, according to an article in the San Diego Reader.
Elizabeth Hannon, the COO of the Uptown Community Parking District, said the changes could take place in spring, 2017.
The Uptown district is one of six districts throughout the city that are working to finding solutions to parking problems in particularly congested areas. Hannon says the changes will encourage faster turnover of patrons visiting businesses in the areas.
In the 1000 and 1700 blocks of University Avenue in Hillcrest, nine new meters will be installed on each block; eight more will go in the 422-510 block of West Washington Street in the Mission Hills neighborhood. Hours of parking meter enforcement also will change in Hillcrest, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Hannon said the shift in hours reflects usage of the spaces. Before 10 in the morning, occupancy of spaces is less than 70%, but it's above 85% from 4-10 p.m. The new hours, she hopes, will discourage people from parking longer at night, freeing up spaces so more people can get to restaurants, shops and entertainment venues.
Cities like this can benefit by working with flyer printing companies, which can create handouts for distribution throughout affected areas, describing upcoming modifications to regulations.
