Basketball legend Bill Walton’s friends and fans have honored him with a larger-than-life bronze statue, which is located at Ski Beach on Mission Bay.
The statue, which weighs about 1,200lb, stands 6'11”, like Walton. The San Diego-based star played professional basketball with the Boston Celtics, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the San Diego Clippers.
However, the statue is not a tribute to his career as an athlete, but as a philanthropist. Over the years, Walton has given back to San Diego hundreds of times. According to Pat Kilkenny, formerly a University of Oregon athletic director, Walton is one of the most generous people he has ever known.
The two got to know one another since both support the Lucky Duck Foundation charity. Kilkenny says that for every 10 charitable events he attends, Walton goes to 100. He adds that Walton and Lori, his wife, do more than attend events; they give money to support the effort too.
In addition to his charitable work and his love of basketball, Walton is also a dedicated cyclist. After the statue's unveiling, he led a bicycle race a distance of 30 miles throughout the Mission Bay area to support military veterans who are suffering from PTSD.
People who organized the effort to create the statue might consider also creating Brochures to explain the life and work of Bill Walton.
