San Diego had a great reason to celebrate recently—a new Dr. Seuss book was released.
Although Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss) has been gone for almost 30 years, his legacy lives on with the release of “Dr. Seuss's Horse Museum.” The release took place at the University of San Diego campus in La Jolla, where Geisel lived for a time.
Audrey Geisel, Theodore Geisel's widow, discovered the unpublished manuscript in 2013, 22 years after Geisel's death. Audrey Geisel passed away last year.
“The Horse Museum” features illustrations by Andrew Joyner, and has some familiar characters making cameos in its pages, including the Cat in the Hat and that Christmas-hater, the Grinch.
UC San Diego's Director of Special Collections and Archives, Lydna Claassen, said the book is one way children can learn about art and how to appreciate it. The story shows how a number of people can view the same thing—a horse, in this case—and see it very differently from one other, depending on their own imagination. Flyer printing can be used to give additional information about the artist in cases like this.
In 1995, the university named the Geisel Library in honor of the Geisels, who donated $20m to the school. Inside the library, students and visitors can enjoy a visit to Audrey's Cafe for coffee, pastries, salads, sandwiches, and specialty coffee drinks. In addition to monetary gifts, Audrey Geisel donated over 12,000 items, including original sketches and drawings, representing her husband's work.
