San Diegans enjoy Robot Day

The San Diego Library hosted its second annual Robot Day on April 3. Attendees included people who like robots, those who are curious about them, and some people who are smart enough to build them.

The goal of the event was to show young people that science and math can be enjoyable, so they might choose a career in the fields. Last year, about 3,000 people enjoyed the day.

Sherri Lightner, president of the San Diego City Council, has advocated for science education for young people for years, and describes robotics as a “cool and important” science. She hopes to show students that they have the ability to work with robots successfully, and not get scared away from studying science.

Robot Day coincided with National Robotics Week, which gave students from around the county a chance to display their automotons. Lucas Weed, who attends Coleman Tech Charter High School said the day was about showing off a bit, as well as getting others interested in robotics.

Robot Day filled three floors of the new Central Library for almost four hours. Exhibits with robot themes, activities, and speakers were all part of the fun.

Library staff members might build on this year's success by creating brochures describing the event, and making them available to schools throughout the county, asking them to plan for next year.
