San Diegan adrenalin junkies get new indoor option

People who like the idea of skydiving but are less keen on the idea of jumping out of an airplane will soon have another option – indoor skydiving.

Texas company iFly plans to open a $10m facility in Mission Valley in the summer of 2015. iFly Indoor Skydiving, which is headquartered in Austin, announced its intentions on Thursday, November 13.

The Mission Valley location will be iFly's 35th such installation in the country. It plans to open another Southern California facility in Carlsbad. A different company plans to open a similar attraction in the East Village neighborhood of downtown San Diego, testifying to the popularity of the pastime.

The centerpiece of these locations is a vertical wind tunnel, in which visitors “fly” on a column of air. The facility itself is 70 feet high, while the wind tunnel is 48 feet tall and has a diameter of 14 feet. The tunnel can handle 12 Flyers every half-hour. In addition to the wind tunnel, the building will have conference rooms, an observation deck, and a room that can be rented for group events and parties.

Work has already started on the site, which is a new development called Discovery Place. iFly is joining Starbucks and a hotel in the $45 million project.

iFly operators could work with a flyer printing company to create handouts for distribution near the new location on opening day.
