OTL Tournament delayed by rain

Heavy rains, almost unknown in San Diego in the summer, pelted down in July, forcing a delay in the yearly Over-The-Line (OTL) Tournament.

The contest finished on August 9, with both the adult and junior OTL World Championships taking place the same day.

This is the 62nd year for the event, which was supposed to wind up on the third weekend in July. However, torrential rains forced the tournament to shut down for a full day, making it the first time in the history of the event that weather has washed it out.

OTL is a sort of beach baseball game played with two teams comprising three players each. The court is about 55 feet wide. Pitchers throw to players on their own teams, and hits are those balls that are not caught when hit into fair territory. Games last for only three or four innings, unless extra innings are necessary to break a tie.

Players of all ages can be found in OTL tournaments; some people are still enjoying the game well into their 80s, and the tournament is a San Diego tradition. It is the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club's biggest fund raising event in any year. The club uses the money to support local charities.

Event organizers can work with a banner printing company to create festive Banners to place on the beach, marking the area in which the tournament is played.
