One of San Diegos biggest celebrations returns
The holiday season in San Diego is marked by one of the most anticipated events in the city.
Once known as Christmas on the Prado, December Nights is a free event that takes place throughout the city’s iconic Balboa Park. The event, now in its 47th year, is family friendly, stretches over two days, and draws as many as 350,000 visitors to the park.
The event includes live music, cultural performances, a chance to sample international cuisines, the tree lighting, and dazzling lights on display throughout the park. One of the most popular activities is a visit to the International Cottage Christmas Festival. There are more than 30 cottages, and they date from 1935 and the California Pacific International Exposition. New cottages were added as recently as 2021. Each cottage represents its country’s culture and gives visitors a chance to try traditional foods and enjoy holiday decorations. Samples of foods might include palak paneer, bratwurst, and empanadas, among others.
One of the most anticipated parts of the event is the participation of the 17 museums in the park, all of which are open and free for the two nights. Among the most popular are the Museum of Us, the Natural History Museum, and the San Diego Air & Space Museum.
December Nights 2024 takes place on December 6 and 7. Organizers of outdoor events like this will often use banner printing to create seasonal decorations.
