Next year, San Diegans flying to Switzerland will have another option for getting there, when Edelweiss, a Swiss airline, begins direct flights between San Diego and Zurich, Switzerland's largest city. At the moment, the service is twice a week only.
Edelweiss is part of the Lufthansa group, and is an affiliate of Swiss International Airlines. San Diego is the only city in California to which Edelweiss provides nonstop service. The airline's CEO, Bernd Bauer, notes that California is a favorite vacation destination for Swiss tourists. He also notes that the Swiss tend to stay for a longer period of time, and spend more money, than other Europeans. According to Bauer, about 15,000 Swiss visit San Diego annually, bringing about $50m in revenue to the city.
Another seasonal service will a start next summer as well. Condor, a German airline, will fly nonstop to Frankfurt. The only other overseas destinations that are currently served by nonstop services from San Diego are Tokyo and London, both of which have daily flights that operate year-round.
The Edelweiss flights will begin in June, 2017, using an Airbus A340-300, which carries 314 passengers. The two flights will leave San Diego at 6:45 pm on Mondays, and at 7:10 pm on Fridays. It is expected that Edelweiss will expand its operations in San Diego after its first year.
