New La Jolla research project may help homeless veterans

Philip Low, CEO of Neurovigil – a neuroscience startup in the San Diego suburb of La Jolla – has carried out brain studies of such importance that he’s met with President Obama, and used Stephen Hawking as a research subject. Now, according to a news item from June 3rd, Low wants to start another study using veterans, especially those who are homeless.

Low’s research would focus on mapping the veterans’ brainwaves to find markers of neurological injuries, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder. The scientist hopes his work will allow veterans to improve their situations and get on with their lives.

Veterans face a difficult time in today’s challenging economy, particularly if they have service-related injuries or issues.

Low plans to use his office space, which is in a shopping mall, for the study. In addition to participating, veterans will receive counseling and be able to take hot showers. Other tenants of the plaza are eager to help. The French restaurant Tapenade will provide meals daily, and several salons will provide services like haircuts.

Jean-Michel Diot, who owns Tapenade, says he appreciates what veterans have done, and loves the idea of being able to give something back to them.

Low could work with a brochure printing company to develop a booklet for the veterans explaining the study itself, as well as listing the amenities available to those who participate.
