Jazz master to play San Diego
One of today’s most popular jazz musicians will visit San Diego soon.
Wynton Marsalis is a native of New Orleans who not only embraced the rich heritage of his hometown, but was also born into a musical family. His father Ellis was a jazz pianist, and his three brothers are also musicians.
Marsalis has a strong education in classical music, having attended both Tanglewood’s Berkshire Music Center and the Julliard School of Music. He began his career working with jazz giants such as Woody Shaw, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, and the great Dizzy Gillespie.
Marsalis released his first recording as a group leader in 1981. Although he formed a quintet that featured Branford on saxophone, that group broke up and Branford left to tour with Sting. Wynton formed another group that included Eric Reed, Herlin Riley, Reginald Veal, Todd Williams, Wes Anderson, Wycliffe Gordon, Wats, Robert Hurst, and Marcus Roberts. This group was together until 1995, and Marsalis still works with many of these musicians.
Marsalis is a Pulitzer Prize winner for his three-disc CD “Blood on the Fields,” has won nine Grammys, and released more than 30 studio albums. The latest, “The Democracy Suite,” dropped in 2021. He is also a published author.
A review says:
Wynton Marsalis will appear at the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park on September 4. When organizers of events like this want to create programs, they can turn to brochure printing.
