Japanese festival comes to San Diego

An important Japanese tradition will be celebrated in San Diego soon.

For more than 500 years, Japanese families have gathered to honor their ancestors in a three-day festival known as Oban. In recent years, Oban has become less about the ancestors and more about family reunions, as many people return home at this time, and visit their family member’s graves. The festival includes singing, dancing, and the use of lanterns that are floated on water to guide the spirits who have come home back to the spirit world.

The Oban Festival will be celebrated at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park. All performances, vendors, and other activities will be held inside the garden, including Bon Odori (dance), which is usually performed in the Organ Pavilion. This year, Bon Odori will take place in the Inamori Pavilion in the Garden.

The garden has two levels, and both will be in use during the event. A Japanese chorus and Taiko Drummers will be located in the lower garden, and vendors will be found throughout the garden, which covers a total of 12 acres. The Toro Nagashi ceremony, which is floating lighted lanterns on water, will take place it the lower garden. Schedules of performances at events like this can be created using flyer printing.

The Obon Festival will take place August 7, from 10.00 am until 5.00 pm. Attendees may purchase lanterns at the Inamori Pavilion. Toro Nagashi will be held at 2.00 pm and 5.00 pm.
