San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) recently announced it is offering customers a chance to lower their bills—all they have to do is drive an electric vehicle.
During the past two years, SDG&E has offered this discount to help combat climate change, and reduce the carbon footprint of San Diego County. There are approximately 35,000 electric vehicles in the county, and drivers are welcome to request the credit, which the California Air Resources Board administers. Companies extending offers like this can work with Print shops to create inserts to go with bills.
In 2017, approximately 7,000 drivers applied, receiving an average credit of $200. In 2018, more than twice as many people—about 15,000—put their names forward and received a $500 credit.
The utility company also has plans that allow residents to pay a monthly fee to charge their electric vehicles. The time-of-use plan allows drivers to plug in their cars from midnight until 6:00 am the following day during the week, and from midnight until 2:00 pm on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. The price on the plans is $0.09 for a kilowatt hour, which is the same as paying $0.75 for a gallon of gas.
Electric vehicle drivers can apply online to receive the credit. They may use the number of their SDG&E account, and they will need a digital copy of their car’s DMV registration, as well as its VIN number. Drivers have until May 31 to apply.
