Comic-Con sells out in minutes
Comic-Con, the biggest pop culture convention in the country, is not until July, but tickets are already gone.
The tickets (known as ‘badges’) are sold online only, and were gone in less than an hour. People who wanted to go to the con but failed to obtain a badge will be unlikely to have another opportunity to do so.
In order to buy badges, hopeful attendees need to create a ‘member ID’ which they use to log into a ‘waiting room’ on the convention's website. From there, the registered members are randomly selected to be able to buy badges. The end result is that not everyone who is in the ‘waiting room’ will be given the opportunity to buy a badge, which means they will not all be able to attend the con.
Comic-Con has adopted this method because its attendance has grown to the point where the organization has to limit the number of attendees because of space restrictions. Even though Comic-Con takes over the convention center, it draws more than 130,000 people for its four-day run, and is now running out of room. This has forced organizers to hold some events in nearby hotels, outdoors, and occasionally Petco Park, the San Diego Padres' baseball field. Comic-Con has committed to remaining in San Diego through the 2018 event.
Considering the demand, organizers might want to create brochures giving information about next year's badge sales.
