Celebrating Steely Dan in San Diego
An upcoming concert will present the Music of Steely Dan by those who know it best.
The show features Tom Scott, Drew Zingg, Keith Carlock, and Mike Stern, along with their special guest, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. This lineup is extraordinary: Saxophonist Scott is a three-time Grammy winner and was the arranger on two of Steely Dan’s albums, “Gaucho” and “Aja.”
Zingg is the former lead guitarist on the band’s tours of the U.S. and Japan in the 1990s. Carlock is the current SD drummer, and has either toured with or recorded with stars such as Diana Ross, TOTO, Sting, and many others.
Stern is acknowledged as a master jazz guitarist, who earned his breakthrough when he was playing in the comeback band of the legendary Miles Davis.
Finally, Jeff Baxter was a founding Steely Dan member, appearing on their first three albums. His solo on “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” is his signature, and the song is the group’s biggest hit.
The backing band features Brad Steinwehe on trumpet, vocalists Elyse Ramsdel, Art Fisher, and Amanda Barnett, Kristin Silver on keyboards, and Fender bassist Miguel Torre.
Steely Dan found success by blending blues, R&B, Latin music, jazz, and rock with mysterious lyrics and high production values, resulting in worldwide sales of 40 million albums.
