Americana band to play San Diego
A Nashville-based string band will be bringing its folk/rock Americana sound to San Diego.
The music of the Old Crow Medicine Show has been referred to as alternative country, folk, old-time, and Americana. They perform original material, as well as folk songs and blues from the pre-World War II era. Americana is a broad label that encompasses music from genres including bluegrass, rock and roll, R&B, jazz, country, blues, gospel, and folk, much of it originating in the South.
Doc Watson, a bluegrass musician, discovered the band busking in North Carolina in 2000, though they had been recording prior to that. They relocated to Nashville in 2000, where they were invited to participate in events at the iconic Grand Ole Opry. They were soon opening for stars like Ricky Skaggs and Dolly Parton, and have since been inducted into the Opry.
Their recording career began in 1998 and they dropped their most recent release, “Paint This Town,” in 2022. They have won two Grammys, including one for Best Folk Album for “Remedy” in 2015. They have released nine studio albums, and six of them went to No. 1 on the Billboard U.S. Grass chart.
