UCSD keeps its top 10 spot

The University of California at San Diego (UCSD) has maintained its strong reputation having been named as the eighth best public institution of higher education in the nation, and the 37th best among all universities both public and private.

The annual list was compiled and released by U.S. News & World Report, which has ranked UCSD among its top 10 public universities each year for the last decade. Last year, the magazine put it at number nine among public schools, and 39th among all universities.

The magazine looked at 280 different schools in the category of national universities, and assigned them their ranking based on 16 separate indicators, such as academic reputation, faculty resources, retention and graduation rates, and student selectivity.

Two other San Diego universities also found their way onto the coveted list: the University of San Diego (USD) came in as 95th in the country, while San Diego State University (SDSU) made it to number 149.

USN&WR also ranked some individual programs in business and engineering within the universities. Here, USD beat out its rival, ranking fourteenth for engineering programs for which students can earn bachelor's and master's degrees; UCSD's program was found to be 26th for schools that award PhDs.

UCSD's chancellors could work with a brochure printer to create a mailer for alumni, citing the school's achievements and suggesting recipients think about supporting the institution.
