Approximately a half-million spectators crowded onto Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, in San Diego, for the 2014 Miramar Air Show.
The spectacle ran for two full days, October 4 and 5, from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm both days, with a twilight show slated for Saturday evening, from 5.30 pm to 9.00 pm. Admission to the show was free, though special seating tickets cost as much as $250.
Among the performers were the Blue Angels, the U.S. Navy's flight demonstration team. The Blue Angels are comprised of seven pilots who fly the main part of the show—a team of six and one narrator, three pilots who fly ‘Fat Albert’, a C-130 Hercules transport, and various supporting personnel.
Also on the program were the U.S. Army's parachute team, the Golden Knights, and the U.S. Navy Leap Frogs. The Golden Knights' members come from the ranks of U.S. Army Paratroopers.
The Leap Frogs are the United States Navy Parachute Team, and are all Navy SEALS. Each team member comes from one of the Naval Special Warfare Groups, located on each coast. After their tour, the team members, like members of both the Blue Angels and Golden Knights, return to their units.
Proceeds from the show help local military families; in 2012, the show brought in $1.6m.
