Special race planned in San Diego

An upcoming 5K in San Diego is designed to honor the sacrifice made by wounded warriors.

The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) started in 2003, with a small group providing simple items to bring comfort to hospitalized service members who were coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq. The group realized that as the veterans faced challenges after their service ended, its programs needed to evolve. Today, the WWP has grown and provides direct programs to deal with issues of career counseling, mental health, and long-term rehab. They also advocate for the rights of these warriors, and work to help them succeed as civilians.

To continue their work, WWP holds events like the upcoming race, which is the San Diego WWP Carry Forward® 5K. Participants can jog, walk, or run, and if they like a challenge, there are three additional ways to support WWP. One is that they can carry a flag, or they may opt to carry a weight, symbolizing the weight borne by veterans. A final option is for “Fierce” participants, who opt to carry another person.

The 5K is scheduled for August 19. Participants will be able to start picking up their packets at 7:00 am, which is also the time for onsite registration. The opening ceremony and start of the 5K is at 8:00 pm. The venue is NTC Park at Liberty Station. When races like this are scheduled, organizers can work with banner printing to create course markers.
