Residents of San Diego's City Heights neighborhood had reason to celebrate on February 17, as the Silverado Ballroom reopened that day.
The ballroom is on the second floor of an Art Deco-style building that dates from the 1930s, and is located on the corner of Euclid and University Avenues. The 85-year-old space hosted dances, community gatherings, and musical performances during its heyday.
The renovation was funded partly by loans from San Diego itself, with $1.38m coming from a redevelopment loan made by the city, and another $81,000 from San Diego's Small Business Revolving Loan Fund. David Chau, who owns the property, put in another $160,000.
Marti Emerald, the councilwoman who represents City Heights, says residents here have been anticipating the event space and new restaurant since the renovations were started. She noted that this project will help inspire other renovations in the area.
Work included rehabbing both the ballroom and the exterior of the building, installing an elevator, improving the first floor for tenants, upgrading the mechanical, electrical and structural components, and putting in new hardscaping and pavement.
Kevin Faulconer, the mayor of San Diego, said the project was a good example of the way in which the city is investing in its culture and supporting its neighborhoods.
