San Diego's Port District considers changes to waterfront

Anthony's Fish Grotto has been serving the city for over 50 years, but that may soon change.

The eatery is a favorite of San Diego residents and visitors alike. Located on the Embarcadero, and extending on a pier out over the water, the restaurant is a landmark, and a place to sit and watch ships.

However, the San Diego Unified Port District is looking at ways to revitalize the Embarcadero and the rest of the waterfront, and is considering replacing Anthony's with a different restaurant. The restaurant's lease expires within the next 18 months. The Port District has identified two potential new establishments, The Brigantine, and Sunroad Enterprises. Although Anthony's is not on the shortlist, there is still a chance it could remain in place.

The Port District's Penny Maus said the restaurant's construction on the pier makes it unique, and both the Brigantine and Sunroad see an opportunity for establishing their brand in the location. The Brigantine already has several restaurants in the area, including Old Town's Miguel's Cocina. Sunroad Enterprises' plans call for a destination area it calls The Embarcadero. The site would comprise a two-story plan, including a craft brewery and several restaurants.

Port District officials might consider working with brochure printers on a booklet to be mailed to residents, describing the proposals from the two new restaurants.
