Two local developers, OliverMcMillan and Sunroad Enterprises, will both be working on the redevelopment of 57 acres on Harbor Island, the San Diego Union-Tribune has reported.
The developers plan to build marinas, restaurants, shops, hotels, and office spaces, as well as recreational facilities and manmade beaches. Open space is also included in the plan, which will rise over the next 10 years.
Port district staff members had recommended that the entire site, which comprises 44 acres, plus another 13 acres of water across from Lindbergh Field, be developed in its entirety by OliverMcMillan. The company planned to spend approximately $978m building manmade canals, 1,500 hotel rooms, and 271,100 square feet of office, restaurant, and retail space.
However, Aaron Feldman, Sunroad’s chairman, said his company had already worked for 11 years, and spent more than $2m, on a portion of the property. He felt it was unfair for the port to give the project to another developer, after his company had invested so much time and money. Sunroad’s plan would bring 346,000 square feet of restaurant, shop and office space to the area, along with 1,025 hotel rooms, and two bridges over the marina.
The port commissioners agreed, and negotiations will begin to include both developers in the final project.
Officials such as these can benefit by working with newsletter printing companies, which can create publications that report on important issues.
