San Diego prepares for Walrus Awareness Week

People who would like to learn about a certain long-toothed marine mammal will have a chance soon, as SeaWorld San Diego’s Walrus Awareness Week nears.

The week also celebrates the return of Dozer to the park. The 3,100lb walrus, a male, is 25 years old, and returned to San Diego in October after spending a year at Tacoma, Washington’s Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. Dozer has also lived at the other two United States SeaWorld parks – one in San Antonio, Texas, and the other in Orlando, Florida.

Dozer, who is described as patient, calm, and smart, is the leader of his group of walruses, known as a ‘huddle’. His diet includes clams, squid, and fish, and he eats 130 pounds of them daily, which enables him to maintain the thick fat layer beneath his skin that keeps him warm. Organizations planning special events like this could distribute promotional Pens to remind visitors of the information they learned.

SeaWorld is using the week to inform guests about the threat global warming poses to the species, and what humans can do to help. SeaWorld’s Mitzi Synott, a senior care specialist, says the reduction in the amount of ice in the Arctic impacts the walrus population negatively, since they rest on the ice, give birth on it, and use it to get to their feeding grounds.

Walrus Awareness Week starts tomorrow, December 2, and runs through next Saturday, December 8.
