San Diego gets set to Bike the Bay

For the eleventh year, bicycle enthusiasts will have a rare opportunity to cycle over the San Diego-Coronado Bridge. Thousands of enthusiastic riders are expected to take part.

The ride is not a race, but a community event during which people of all bicycling levels and ages come together to cover a 25-mile course through San Diego, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, National City, and Coronado. and some of its suburbs. New this year is an eight-mile loop of dirt trails.

The popular event is also a fundraiser for the San Diego County Bike Coalition, a non-profit group that advocates for bicyclists' rights. The ride also encourages people to get out and rediscover some of the beauty of the area, as well as encouraging them to ride instead of driving a car.

Andy Hanshaw is the executive director of the Bike Coalition, and says the group welcomes anyone who wants to join the ride, which is why a route was developed that takes riders through five separate neighborhoods, plus the dirt trails. The ride starts and finishes in Embarcadero Marina Park South, Marina Park Way, San Diego.

The ride takes place August 26, and riders have two different start times. Enthusiasts start at 7 am, and recreational riders start at 8 am. A post-ride festival is scheduled from 8.30 am until 12.30 pm, and such events can be even more fun if organizers use banner printing to create decorations for the venue.
