San Diego basks in hottest Thanksgiving in over a century

In contrast to the chilly weather in the Midwest and East of the U.S., California enjoyed an unseasonably warm November 27, with San Diego in particular soaring into the modern day record Books.

At San Diego National Airport, a temperature of 85°F was recorded, making it the warmest Thanksgiving since 1903. The previous highest since then had been in 1977, when the mercury rose to 84°F.

San Diego was not the hotspot of California on the day, though; that honor went to Riverside, for which Turkey Day sweltered in 91°F, beating a record that had stood since 1945 by a couple of degrees. Fellow California cities Santa Ana and Escondido also broke temperature records dating back to the first half of the 20th Century.

Neighboring state Arizona also saw record breakers, with Phoenix the subject of an all-time high of 87°F, according to the Arizona Republic.

Meteorologists point out, however, that temperatures are likely to be cooler today due to breezes coming in off the sea, and that locals may even see fog over the weekend. With weather often being hard to predict at this time of year, local councils often keep motorists and residents aware of the steps they need to take to deal with seasonal challenges, with flyer and poster printing campaigns frequently helping their cause.
