Reworked classic coming to San Diego

The classic musical “The Sound of Music” is on tour around the country, and is making a stop in San Diego.

The production is directed by Jack O’Brien, who was the Artistic Director of San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre from 1981 until 2007.

O’Brien has won three Tonys and five Drama Desk Awards for his work on Broadway, and says he has tried to give a very familiar show a fresh twist. He has carefully studied the text and realized there are aspects to the story that have not been explored, and has concentrated on those, such as the possibility of romance between Maria and Captain Von Trapp. He also realized the song ‘16 Going on 17’, sung by a young man who becomes a Nazi, is less a love song than a warning. Audiences have so far responded positively to O’Brien’s vision.

The show will be at the Civic Theatre for a very limited run. It opens this evening, November 15, with a performance at 7:00 pm., with subsequent performances on November 16 at 7:00 pm, and November 17 and 18 at 7:30 pm. The weekend brings matinees: on Saturday, November 19, the shows are at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm, and on Sunday, performances are scheduled for 1:00 pm and 6:30 pm, which brings its run to an end.

Events like these can benefit when organizers work with poster printing companies, which can create placards for advertising and for sale.
