Plans proposed 30th Street alterations

A San Diego city councilman has proposed significant changes to 30th Street, the main north-south street joining North and South Park. The change would make the street safer for cyclists, but eliminate parking.

There are two segments to the plan. The first follows 30th from Howard Avenue south to Upas Street, and offers three potential designs. The second continues south from Upas Street to Juniper Street, with two different options for designs. Making the route safe for bikers would eliminate almost all the street parking – over 400 spaces.

The potential changes were discussed at a recent meeting of the North Park Main Street Association. Opinions were fairly evenly split between those who fear losing parking will impact their businesses, and those who want to encourage greener transportation options.

The meeting ended with the Association voting for Option C for the segment from Howard to Upas, and Option A for the section from Upas to Juniper. Option C eliminates 111 parking spots, adds a buffered bike lane, and eliminates 30th Street's center lane. Option A adds bike lanes to the sides of the street, and does away with street parking entirely. Officials can work with Print shops to create a newsletter for residents, discussing important issues.

Plans will be discussed again this Tuesday, May 14, at a meeting of the North Park Planning Committee, after which Councilmember Ward will formally recommend a design to the Mayor's office. If approved, the work will be done simultaneously with pipeline replacement on 30th Street.
