Locals flag up ailing state of San Diego pond

A pond on the Carmel Mountain Ranch Golf Course, which was closed last year, is drying up, threatening the turtles and koi fish living there, according to an article on the CBS8 website.

From the air, it is easy to see the extent of the problem. A waterfall that brought fresh water to the pond is almost completely gone, and the pond itself has shrunk significantly, leaving one small area where the koi are gathering, trying to survive.

Nearby residents brought the problem to the property owner’s attention. Bruce Doyle’s condo overlooks the golf course, and he, along with others in the complex, became concerned that the pond is becoming an eyesore.

Even worse, however, is the fact living creatures are being threatened: “It comes down to the heart,” Doyle said, noting the fish, turtles, and other animals who need the pond are trying to live in the same way as we are.

Doyle said he has seen increasingly less wildlife as time has gone on, and with the property’s future uncertain, he and others maintain something should be done. It has now been confirmed that the Humane Society is investigating, and the property’s owner reassured everyone he is taking steps to save the koi. In situations like this, a property owner might work with a poster printing company to create Signs to mitigate neighbors’ concerns.
