Celtic Woman, an all-female vocal group that has been compared to artists like Clannad, Moya Brennan, and Enya, is the brainchild of Sharon Browne and David Downes. Downes had worked on the stage production “Riverdance,” and wanted to introduce more people to Celtic music via a vocal group, as “Riverdance” features dance. His idea was inspired, and Celtic Woman was a hit almost from the beginning.
The group released their first album, “Celtic Woman,” in 2005, and it rocketed to No. 1 on the Billboard World Music chart, where it remained for 81 weeks, launching the group’s career.
With that success the group began touring, averaging 35 weeks annually on the road. PBS often broadcast their live performances, and in 2006, they released “Celtic Woman: A Christmas Celebration,” their second album. It finally knocked their first album off the top chart spot. Their third album, 2007’s “Celtic Woman: A New Journey,” also made it high onto the charts, giving them three albums at the top. Their most recent effort, “20,” dropped in 2024. A review says:
“Beautiful voices and really care . . . You can feel the emotion in the songs.”
Celtic Woman will be at the Civic Theatre on May 9. When performances like this are planned, organizers will often use poster printing to promote them.
