The noted Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, under the baton of their new music director, violinist Joshua Bell, will appear at Copley Symphony Hall. The Academy has toured extensively internationally, and has over 500 recordings to its credit. The orchestra was formed in 1958 by Sir Neville Marriner, who was its only music director until Joshua Bell was appointed in 2011. At that time, Sir Neville became the ensemble’s Life President; he passed away in 2016.
Joshua Bell began playing the violin was he was five, and made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1985, with the St. Louis Symphony. He was 17 years of age. A review of an Academy performance under Bell says the ensemble is as polished and assured as ever:
“But under Bell they have a remarkable focus, too, and there’s an etched clarity to their playing: every gesture has direction and meaning
.”
The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields will appear at the Jacobs Music Center in Copley Symphony Hall at 8.00 pm on March 8. The program for the concert comprises the Paganini Violin Concerto No. 1, opus 6, and what is perhaps the most iconic symphony ever written, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony in C minor, opus 67.
