Beginning in June, community colleges in San Diego will start offering 200 additional classes, bringing the number of courses back to the levels they enjoyed before the recession.
According to an April 14 2015 news item, that raises the total number of courses being offered this summer to 1,300.
Courses will be given by Mesa College, City College, and Miramar College, which are all part of the San Diego Community College District. Constance M. Carroll, SDCCD Chancellor, said the district was delighted to be able to return the summer session to where it was before the district faced budget cuts by the state. She noted that many students count on summer classes to help them increase their rate of progress toward graduation, or to build up credits to help them transfer.
She also noted that students already enrolled in four-year universities often attend summer classes to satisfy requirements for their degrees. The result in all these cases is a larger number of students going to summer school.
There will be four summer sessions of for-credit courses this year. They begin weekly: the first starts June 1, the second June 8, the third July 15, and the final one July 6. Noncredit, continuing education courses will be offered free of charge until August 22.
The district might consider working with a flyer printing company on a mailer for area residents, outlining the additional courses and the schedule.
