The City Council has okayed an ordinance that changes the city’s municipal code. The amendment was made with the goal of helping the state of California deal with its affordable housing crisis. Documents filed by government agencies tend to feature official Letterheads on them.
When explaining the council’s decision, Mayor Samantha Rodriguez stated to TheCommunityVoice.com:
“We want to preserve our neighborhoods and maintain a tight-knit community. Simplifying the ADU development process provides a source of income for homeowners. This will also make Rohnert Park more accessible for those who cannot afford single-family homes.”
An ADU is classified as a small space for living built on the same plot as a single-family home. ADUs must have their own separate entrances, permanent kitchens, sleeping areas, living rooms, and bathrooms. Owners are able to rent out their ADUs, but they cannot be sold as individual properties.
As of this month, ADUs are not required to match the same style as the main dwelling, the height limitations have been increased, and some installations may be exempt from fire sprinkler installation requirements.
