Eastern and western dancing fused in Rohnert Park

Sonoma State University is preparing to present ‘HERE: A US-Korean Dance and Live Music Exchange’. The performance is billed on the Flyers as a “rare, creative fusion of identity and culture”.

The dance and music event is the culmination of a two-year exchange and residency program between Sonoma State and the SungKyunKwan University in Seoul, South Korea. The production is being jointly directed by Christine Cali, of Cali and Co Dance, and Matt Langlois, from Matt EL. Special artistic direction was also provided by Kyoungil Ong, of Ong Dance.

The show is being promoted as a mixture of traditional Korean and modern American dance styles. The performance will be given by 13 SSU dance members and 5 members of the Cali and Co dance company. The dancers will be performing against the backdrop of live American Indie music performed by the band Matt EL. Immediately after the show, there will be a discussion panel with Christine Cali, Matt Langlois, Kyoungil Ong, and SSU’s Anthony Bish.

The dancing fusion will be performed in about two weeks’ time on Tuesday, April 5, from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm at Well Hall located at 1801 E. Cotati Ave. in Rohnert Park. Tickets are free to the public. Anyone interested can call the University or visit the website for more information.
